Chris Weidman’s road to recovery following his horrific leg break has hit a setback.

The former UFC middleweight champion suffered a terrible injury with the very first strike thrown against Uriah Hall back at UFC 261 in April.

The 37 year old had surgery the next day and has even attempted to do some work in the gym since, but now Weidman has revealed that complications with his recovery mean he has to go under the knife once more.

“I’m actually getting another surgery - I just found out,” Weidman told “MMA Today” on SiriusXM. “I’m getting another surgery most likely on August 11.

“They’re going to have to plate the fibula bone because it’s considered a non-union, so the bones aren’t healing the way it’s supposed to, which kind of sucks.

“I did expect setbacks and issues with this type of traumatic injury, and I’ve been through a lot.”

Weidman speculated he may lose his leg in the early going as he’s had complications with broken bones before.

The American had a problem with his thumb after fighting Kelvin Gastelum and after having surgery, the blood supply to the bone wasn’t working. That’s when the bone starts to die, so Weidman was forced to have that bone removed and a thumb constructed from the bone in his hip instead.

Still, Weidman maintains a positive outlook and he remains determined to make a comeback to the octagon when he is able to do so.

“At the end of the day, I guess my mindset is: I’m just a positive person to begin with,” Weidman said.

“Not that I don’t have moments of negativity and laziness and lack of motivation, but I’m usually a glass half full type of person. I think that helps.

“If I ever feel bad for myself, it’s very easy to look at someone else who has it worse and realise you have nothing to complain about it and you shouldn’t feel sorry for yourself.”

Conor McGregor also suffered a broken leg at UFC 264 and he too had surgery the next day.

The Irishman has been back in the gym working out already and UFC president Dana White has suggested July 2022 is a tentative comeback date for the box office star.
